Today, the 8th, we drove from Benson, AZ to Camping World in Tucson, AZ (Irvington Road) to get our front furnace fixed before going in to Quartzsite, AZ. Don and Sharon Del Rosario followed us and arranged for us to spend the night in a site next to them at Davis Monthan AFB Fam Camp – in a nice full hookup site. Camping World determined that the electronic board in our Suburban Furnace was bad, and we only had to pay the deductible for our extended warranty. We tried the furnace when we arrived at the FamCamp, and it worked. We will see if it continues to work.
On the 9th, we left Tucson, and drove to a Passport America campground behind the Shell Station in Gila Bend, AZ. The park was full, and the campground host said the other park in town was also full, due to construction workers living in the area and paying by the month. Campgrounds can’t afford to have open sites for travelers that might stop, when they can be full with people paying by the month. Don and Sharon did not arrive until about 6pm. They had an 8AM appointment at Freightliner in Tucson for an oil change. It took 7 1/2 hours because the tech was pulled off to work on trucks whenever they arrived instead of finishing Don’s Phaeton. That Freightliner is not an Oasis dealer, and Don said it will never receive his business again. Dinner was at Little Italy in downtown (if you can call it that) Gila Bend. Since the campgrounds were full, we both spent the night in the Shell Station’s ample truck parking.
We left Gila Bend about 9:30am and drove north on AZ 85 to get back on I-10 West. We stopped in Quartzsite, AZ for lunch at Taco Mio. The four of us (Marilyn and I plus Don and Sharon) were joined by Denny and Susie Orr, Frank and Gloria King, and Roger and Liz Grant. We all had a good lunch, with great company, and lively conversations. After lunch, we continued our journey on to the La Paz County Park in Parker, AZ for the Escapees Chapter 21 rally. We were now six, with Frank and Gloria joining us. We went to Maya’s Mexican Restaurant & Sports Bar for Dinner. These are pictures of the ladies and gentlemen.
Then here is a map of our travel from Tucson to Parker, AZ. Notice that we are not far from California.
