2014-09-21

Last Thursday morning, when Marilyn and I went to WalMart, I saw a 10’ Rhino sewer hose extension and an RV screen door closer bar. I only purchased the screen door bar. Little did I know that I would need it in Maryland. Yesterday, Marilyn and I went to three different WalMart’s before I could find one at the one Marilyn said I should have gone to first.

This morning, I installed the screen door closer bar.

After lunch, we drove to Frederick, MD to tour the July 9, 1864 Civil War Battlefield National Park of Monacacy.

DSC02988  General Jubal Early was on his to capturing Washington DC. However, he was delayed for a day, which allowed the Union reinforcements to arrive.

The Union defendants were not army regulars. They were enlisted for only 100 days, but 3300 of them held off the 6,600 soldiers of the Confederacy. The battle at Monocacy took place on three different farms and a mill. These houses are still standing today.

2014-09-20 Saturday

Yesterday, we left Tri-State RV Park in Matamoras, PA in the morning, and drove to Ramblin Pines Campground in Woodbine, MD. Our route took us west on I-84, then south on I-81 and I-83, and then west on I-70 a short ways. Fullscreen capture 9202014 104702 AM.bmp

I started to write this blog last night, but was too tired.

We had a wonderful 4 days visiting with Terri and Phil Tobin in Westtown NY. She is a wonderful cook, and we ate super well. Wednesday, we all went to Poughkeepsie, NY to meet their granddaughter, Amanda and twins, for lunch and to walk across the Hudson River. The twins, Lydia and Lucas, were only 8 weeks old, and adorable. IMG_20140917_130305_458. In 2009, the old railroad bridge was converted into a walking bridge across the Hudson. IMG_20140917_122201_331. We went up the outside elevator that had only been open for two weeks. IMG_20140917_122944_864. Phil and I followed the pretty ladies across the bridge because we had to stop and read the signs. Terri got to push the carriage with her great grand babies. This is a nice picture of Amanda, Terri, Phil and the carriage. IMG_20140917_131042_597. Here are some views from the bridge. If you have money to contribute to support the walking bridge you can have your name on one of these medallions for only $5,000. IMG_20140917_132538_698. Or, you can get your name on a bench for $10,000. We decided we could not afford one. On the way back across the bridge, the twins had to be fed and changed. Marilyn happily got to hold Lucas. We all had good lunches at River Station.

2014-09-14

On the 11th of September, we moved from Interlake RV Park & Sales near Rhinebeck NY to Beaver Spring Lake Campground near Davenport NY.

The purpose of the change was to be VCRs (Volunteer Club Representative for the Escapees RV Club) at the NY SKPs Chapter 41 rally. Se have thoroughly enjoyed this rally and the chance to meet RVers from NY. We did eat well, as all Escapees do. In addition, we enjoyed the Wine Auction (every rig at the rally brought a bottle of wine or non-alcoholic beverage) for Care. we succeeded in buying some wine at the auction. IMG_20140912_205158_392

Of course, we were adopted since this was our first Chapter 41 rally. Our new parents are John and Carol Berggren. IMG_20140914_094102_746

Tonight, since the rally was over, we gathered for happy hour and dinner of leftovers.

We plan to do some sightseeing in Oregon and Washington.

When we start back East, we plan to drive the Southern Canada route. Of course that route will interfere with our buying Kahlua.

2014-09-09 Cemetery and a Dead Coffee Pot

Sunday afternoon, the 7th, we toured Val-Kill, the only home actually owned by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor. DSC02985  The Cottage and pool were used to entertain numerous famous people and politicians while FDR was alive. DSC02984  However, Eleanor still yearned for her own home. So, she converted the building that had been used for furniture manufacturing into her own house. This is the front door in the back. DSC02979 DSC02981 DSC02982  Since the conversion took place after FDR’s death, it is described as 1950’s style. The office. DSC02975  The dining room. DSC02976  And the living room. Yesterday, the 8th, we drove 100 miles,on a guess to Lyndhurst, NJ to visit Hillside Cemetery in the hope of getting pictures of the graves of Marilyn’s Great Grand Parents. Not only did we find their graves, but we found her great grand father’s mother’s grave. The reason I called it a guess was because, only because her great grand father lived in Rutherford, NJ in 1905, died in 1917, but his wife did not die until 1953. She died in Riverhead, NY, and there was no Hillside cemetery in Suffolk County. but I found one near where she lived 50 years previously. On the way back to the campground, we decided to drive up the west side of the Hudson River. Marilyn saw 2, but we were only able to get a picture of one – the Esopus Lighthouse. This morning, our Mr. Coffee (K-cup version) continued to give us trouble, so I tried the de-scaling procedure. It just made things worse, so we went looking for a new coffee pot. Sam’s Club had a Cuisinart for $50, but when I checked, its reviews were not very good. Next, we went to Target, and they had the $99.99 Keureg K-10 on sale for $89.99, so we bought one. It is different in that it does not have a multi-cup reservoir, but its size fits. It makes just one at a time. Hopefully it will last more than 13 months.

2014-09-05

We moved on the 3rd to Interlake RV Park & Sales, near Rhinebeck, NY. It was about 180 miles. Fullscreen capture 952014 35627 PM.bmp

Yesterday morning we left the park, and drove 60 miles south on the Taconic State Parkway (TSP, for passenger cars only) to Valhalla, NY for genealogy on Marilyn’s side of the family. Her grand parents and great-grand parents on the Geis DSC08260 side are buried in Kensico Cemetery. DSC08266.  After leaving Kensico, we drove to the village of Sleepy Hollow where we found the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery DSC08268 DSC08269. The Old Dutch Church was built in 1697 according to the sign and is still in use. DSC08271. Nearby is a sign for the location of The Headless Horseman Bridge made famous by Washington Irving DSC08270. The cemetery is open to the public and contains the graves of Washington Irving, Samuel Gompers and Leona Helmsley. We only went to the Irving Family plot. DSC08273 DSC08274. Before leaving the cemetery, we drove down to see the re-created Headless Horseman Bridge. DSC08276 .

After leaving Sleepy Hollow we headed up Rte. 9 with a stop at Subway for lunch followed by stops at Sam’s Club and WalMart in Fishkill before returning to the campground via TSP.

2014-09-02

Today, Marilyn and I along with Denny and Susie Orr drove to North Kingston, RI to take the Lighthouse and Newport Harbor Cruise. We arrived early, and went to lunch at the Beach Rose Cafe in Wickford, RI. The pager to let us know when lunch was done was cute. IMG_20140902_113854_582 He lit up and vibrated. Marilyn and Susie made a new friend at the Cafe. IMG_20140902_121302_170  We saw 10 lighthouses on the cruise. Some were inactive, and some lighthouses were just remnants.
